In 1990, a new constitution was adopted that declared the country a now multiparty state, with periodic elections, and guaranteed democratic rights. Currently, Armando Guebuza is the president. The politics of this country takes place in a framework of a representative democratic republic. Currently, Armando Guebuza is the president. The politics of this country takes place in a framework of a representative democratic republic. This means that President of Mozambique is head of state and government, and then that the Executive power is exercised by the government and the Legislative power is vested in both the government and the Assembly of the Republic. The FRELIMO power has been in power since independence from Portugal in 1975, and they are looking to take the country into a Communist direction.
Because Portugal chose to ignore their colony and let it fall into a world of chaos and ruin, the whole country had to deal with lack of investment and poverty, and it took them a while to finally get back on track. Now that the government is finally organized and running smoothly, we can see hope for the people and economy of Mozambique. If the Portuguese had not left their colony in such a horrible state and had not given them to the British, switching up the government so much, then Mozambique could have had a more thriving economy today with not as many people in poverty or starving.
