This is a website about Mozambique, a country in Africa located on the
eastern coast right across from the island of Madagascar and separated by the Mozambique Channel. All semester in my Post-1800 Africa class I have been working on different projects concerning this country. Using the information I have compiled from previous presentations and my research paper, I have made a website focusing on the pre-colonial period, the colonial and post-independence periods, the current political regime, and some socio-political information.
Before Mozambique finally gained independence in 1974, during the colonial era, the country had a couple different rulers that treated them as inferiors, forced them into labor, poverty and starvation, and eventually just ignored them altogether. Along the road to independence and just a few short years after gaining the right as a free country, Mozambique gained the title as one of the poorest countries in the world based on their money and economic issues. The current government has faced a lot of colonial neglect and war to try and rebuild the country’s economy and turn it to the right direction to become successful for one of the first times in its history. These struggles of poverty, war, and lack of investment in Mozambique today can be linked to the country’s colonial history when the Portuguese started to ignore their settlements and let them fall into a ruinous condition. Even though this country has faced a lot of hardship over the years, this website will also give you the positive side of things and explain how it has the potential to become a successful country.
